In the quiet area of Hawthorn Drive in Blackburn, Rishton Golf Club has stood as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its members and staff. Known for its picturesque parkland setting, this members club offers an 11-hole course that didn't come easy. Originally a 9-hole layout, the course faced a substantial setback in 1982. Motorway Construction decided the most efficient path between Blackburn and nearby cities would cut right through Rishton's 8th fairway. This disruptive decision left the 7th green and 9th tee separated by a gaping motorway and a whole lot of frustration.
Unwilling to let their course be reduced to a mere obstacle on a transportation map, Rishton Golf Club found salvation in the form of the Alliss Thomas partnership. New holes were designed to restore the integrity of the course, although the early days of these additions were far from ideal. Players complained that landing on these "concrete" greens would cause balls to overshoot by a staggering 30 meters. However, the years that followed would see a tireless commitment from the greens staff to nurse these areas back to health.
Fast forward to today, and those once problematic greens have been meticulously maintained to become some of the finest putting surfaces in Lancashire. The 11-hole course now boasts a par 70 layout that stretches over 6,127 yards from the white tees. It's a testament to the dedication of everyone involved that Rishton Golf Club managed to not only recover but improve, turning what could have been a permanent scar into a focal point of pride and quality.
It's not just the course that makes Rishton a local landmark; the clubhouse has also become a hub for a variety of events. Whether it's the joyous celebrations of a wedding, the sombre gatherings of a funeral, or any other form of merriment and fellowship, the club extends its warm hospitality beyond the realm of golf. All things considered, Rishton Golf Club has demonstrated that with the right mix of resilience, community involvement, and a dedicated staff, any obstacle can be transformed into an opportunity for growth and excellence.
