Nestled on the breathtaking Isle of South Uist lies a golfing treasure, the Askernish Golf Club. This gem boasts an 18-hole links course that will leave you speechless. The story of its revival is as remarkable as the course itself.
The journey to rediscover Askernish began when golf course consultant, Gordon Irvine, heard whispers about a legendary course designed by none other than "Old" Tom Morris back in 1891. Intrigued but sceptical, Gordon reached out to the club's chairman, Ralph Thompson, who convinced him to see it for himself. Despite the wet weather during his December visit, Gordon couldn't deny the potential he witnessed.
Determined to bring back the glory of Askernish, Gordon assembled a team including architect Martin Ebert, greenkeeper Chris Haspell, and editor Adam Lawrence. Together with a group of club members, they retraced "Old" Tom's original design, and a plan was born. The following March, restoration work commenced, and the course began to take shape.
Fast forward to the present, and Askernish Golf Club stands proud with its 18 holes, delivering a par 72 challenge over a length of 6259 yards from the white tees. Every hole reflects the artistry of "Old" Tom Morris, a testament to the passion and dedication of those who brought this hidden gem back to life.
Beyond the fantastic course, the club provides excellent amenities. Their clubhouse features a cosy cafe to unwind after a round, and they offer equipment hire, including trolleys and clubs, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.
Askernish Golf Club is not just a course; it is a piece of history lovingly restored to its former glory. So, if you're seeking a golfing adventure like no other, venture to the Isle of South Uist and bask in the allure of Askernish. You won't be disappointed.
